That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren't included in thesauri. I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. So in a sense, this tool is a "search engine for words", or a sentence to word converter. ![]() It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it's starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). For example, if you type something like "longing for a time in the past", then the engine will return "nostalgia". It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. The scores they attach to writing are based on mathematical equations that assign or deduct value according to the programmer's instructions. The software vastly accelerates the feedback loop."īut computers are illiterate. "Or there is no time to do anything about it. "If it takes a couple weeks to get back to the student they don't care about it anymore," he said. ![]() Where it might take a human reader five minutes to attach a holistic score to a piece of writing, the automated system can process thousands at a time, producing a score within a matter of seconds, Wilson said. Those who have participated in the traditional method of scoring standardized tests know that it takes a toll on the human assessor, too. "Writing is very time and labor and cost intensive to score at any type of scale," Wilson said. Classroom teachers can evaluate writing in less time, of course, but it still can take weeks, as any English teacher with five or six sections of classes can attest. Their scores are calibrated and analyzed for subjectivity and, in large-scale assessments, the process can take a month or more. When scored by humans, essays are evaluated by groups of readers that might include retired teachers, journalists and others trained to apply specific rubrics (expectations) as they analyze writing. If computer models provide acceptable evaluations and speedy feedback, they reduce the amount of needed training for human scorers and, of course, the time necessary to do the scoring.Ĭonsider the thousands of standardized tests now available – state writing tests, SAT and ACT tests for college admission, GREs for graduate school applicants, LSATs for law school hopefuls and MCATs for those applying to medical school. The benefits of automation are great, from an administrative point of view. Those who used standard feedback methods without automated scoring said they spent more time discussing spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. In earlier research, Wilson and his collaborators showed that teachers using the automated system spent more time giving feedback on higher-level writing skills – ideas, organization, word choice. However, Wilson's research is the first to look at how the software might be used in conjunction with instruction and not as a standalone scoring/feedback machine. Researchers have established that computer models are highly predictive of how humans would have scored a given piece of writing, Wilson said, and efforts to increase that accuracy continue. Both PARCC and Smarter Balanced are computer-based tests that will use automated essay scoring in the coming years. Other standardized tests also include writing components, such as the assessments developed by the Partnership for Assessment of College and Careers (PARCC) and the Smarter Balanced Assessment, used for the first time in Delaware this year. That test uses trained readers for all scoring. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, also called the Nation's Report Card, first offered computer-based writing tests in 2011 for grades 8 and 12 with a plan to add grade 4 tests in 2017. Finding reliable, efficient ways to assess writing is of increasing interest nationally as standardized tests add writing components and move to computer-based formats. Writing is recognized as a critical skill in business, education and many other layers of social engagement. The idea is to give teachers useful diagnostic information on each writer and give them more time to address problems and assist students with things no machine can comprehend – content, reasoning and, especially, the young writer at work. The software uses algorithms to measure more than 500 text-level variables to yield scores and feedback regarding the following characteristics of writing quality: idea development, organization, style, word choice, sentence structure, and writing conventions such as spelling and grammar. Stronghold: Warlords is due out sometime next year, and you can see a few more screenshots on its Steam store page or official site here. It's a bold comeback for the series, and possibly a risky one. I'm curious to see how all these takes on warfare will mesh under a single, unified control system. The cultures all have distinct looks already, with China getting its iconic high-walled cities, while Japan has a snazzy line in ornate, towering castles. One will tackle the rise of the Japanese Shogunate, another, war in 3rd century BC China and a third will chart the advance of the Mongol Empire. It sounds like FireFly are fully committed to the eastern setting in their single player modes, with multiple campaigns with interestingly varied themes. Other studios have tried to blend traditional RTS and grand strategy motifs, but few have pulled it off, with Ironclad's (still very actively modded) Sins Of A Solar Empire being the most notable. The move to larger maps with AI factions is breaking new ground for the series, and a challenge that I hope FireFly can rise to. Building huge castles with traps and defences, and then fending off huge waves of attackers is always compelling stuff. The Stronghold series has had some ups and downs (the less said about Stronghold 3, the better), but started out on a very strong, compelling foundation. See how the warlords work in the trailer below. While not quite as sprawling as a Total War game or Sins Of A Solar Empire, it's an interesting way to expand the design. Warlords is also expanding the game outwards, and adding a 'light' grand strategy layer, letting players boss around the titular warlords AI controlled minor factions that can work for or against you. Yet another series announced to be returning at E3 is Fireflys Stronghold series. Stronghold: Warlords transplants the RTS game of European (and Arabic) castle building and siege-ing to the east, with Japan, Korea, China and other nations represented. Otherwise, all tickets must be purchased in person at The Family Adventure Park (more on that gem later). You should note that over the winter holidays (December 25-January 1) the resort can be crowded and a limited number of tickets for snow tubing can be purchased online the day before. At times it can get crowded, but there are two conveyer lifts taking tubers back up the 120 ft vertical drop, so the wait times are somewhat mitigated. The tubing hill has sixteen lanes for tubers to go down the 900 ft lanes. But we still drove over to the Ski Lodge and took it all in (and realized it just wouldn’t have worked for the wiggly two year old, so ultimately, we were better off). So beyond the fact that we had an entire condo to ourselves, why else would we return to Massanutten rather than head somewhere else? Well, it’s everything that’s outside of the condo, both on the resort grounds and off. (And access to a clothes washer and dryer right outside the door…and if you know me, you know I’m a sucker for packing light and doing laundry on the road.) The footprint of the resort (6,000 acres) starts at the bottom of the valley and continues up all the way mountain, so a car is necessary to get around the resort. This holiday we booked a condo with a full living room, dining room, kitchen, and balcony. The first one is that Massanutten is made of combination of condos and hotels, so for a family of five, we can have the space we need. Why the same place twice? Well, there are two giant reasons that we’re going to be heading back. A quiet sign is all that marks the beginning of the steep climb up to the resort. And more than likely, we’ll be staying at Massanutten again. Now, I will be upfront and say, we haven’t been able to explore as much of Virginia as we’ve been wanting to, but at least we got a taste. And on the final nights of the year we fulfilled that promise, staying at Massanutten Resort right outside of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. So last year, we promised ourselves we would. (I have no idea though because it is just an endless expanse of driving.) But one thing I am certain about: we always leave Virginia wishing we had spent time in Virginia. The thing is, this isn’t because we make a ton of stops in VA it’s because VA is deceptively large. In another flashback, we saw why: Farah contacted Lizzie to ask why she betrayed her and that she'd recorded everything that happened that day on her phone, and knows that Lizzie lied to the police. He revealed that Hadley took Farah's phone. Later, Younes finally talks to Sarah about what happened. Lizzie clearly covered for Hadley because she was so upset about Cosmina's murder. Jack O'Neill explains what happened (and all the mistakes that both had committed) to Sarah, but says that the complaint against Hadley would have interfered with the Laszlo Kovacs case. Hadley found Lizzie shaken by her encounter and called in a description of Laszlo over the radio, then forced Cosmina to go to hospital where she passed away. Laszlo returned, pulled a gun on Lizzie, took his money and fled on foot. In more flashbacks, we saw the incident unfold: Lizzie and Hadley found Kovacs' victim, Cosmina, badly beaten after a member of the public forced entry into the house. Kieran tells her the case is with the murder squad and directs her to DS Jack O'Neill. Sarah then approaches Kieran and tells him she knows about the affair and demands to know more about the Kovacs case the three officers worked on together. With evidence of police misconduct piling up, Sarah orders that Kieran be placed under surveillance which DCI Bailie denies. In a flashback, we learned that Hadley pressured Lizzie into covering for him, and Kieran was having an affair with Lizzie. Lizzie, meanwhile, had put in a second police statement that clarified she had not heard Hadley make any remarks specifically after her commanding officer, Kieran Shaw.
